Last November, world experts in sports-related concussions gathered at the 2012 Zurich Concussion in Sport Conference. The organizers included the International Ice Hockey Federation, FIFA, and the International Olympic Committee, with participants from highly recognized sports organizations, e.g. NHL and NFL.
This year’s conference produced a new Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport, which supports recent research about the seriousness of sports-related concussions. Published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the Statement underscores the need for proper diagnosis and care, i.e. no return to play the day of the injury and no return until the athlete is symptom-free. It is available to athletes, coaches, parents, healthcare professionals and any interested party involved in the care of injured athletes.
